St. Patrick’s Day is one of the biggest excuses to party hard in Chicago. Every young adult prepares themselves for a weekend of heavy drinking while parading around the city with a “green liquor coat” on for warmer, but not quite warm enough temperatures. With the dying of the river green, and the Irish parade, Chicago has to be the best cities outside of the homeland to celebrate St. Pattie’s.
When trying to come up with a treat to share for the holiday, I cleaned out my refrigerator of basic baking supplies to prepare some simple sugar cookies with a festive flair.
One thing you can learn about making sugar cookies is that depending on your oven the baking times will vary based on the heat your oven gives off. It is very important to keep an eye on your cookies as they bake. I almost felt like they were going to be under cooked, but as soon as you start to see a speck of brown on the outer edges of the cookies they are ready to be pulled out of the oven.
Martha’s recipe uses a little bit of lemon zest, which I did without but I am sure it would add a little flair to these addictive cookies. Here is the link to the recipe:
