When you think of combining beer with yoga it's hard not to picture a class full of yogis struggling in their attempt to find balance in a standing tree pose. You would also assume most people would want to avoid a sudden rush of dizziness while moving into down dog. Although, breweries across the country have started to pair craft beer with exercise and meditation for the ultimate mind and body experience.
This trend took off in Colorado as breweries began beer and yoga tasting sessions and events like this have now spread to Chicago.
Yogis can loosen up their muscles and extend their practice beyond the mat by taking to the tasting tables following their session. Beer fans will be "hopping" to the end of their mat with the opportunity to mingle with fellow class mates while learning about the ingredients of a variety of crafts beers.
Temperance Brewery in Evanston offers beer and yoga sessions every third Saturday of the month for $15. Yogaquech also has a variety of win/beer and yoga events for $25-$35 dollars.
Jennifer Arrington Breen led a recent yoga session at Temperance, and she recently told The Chicago Tribune, "Yoga is really about bringing the body and the mind together and mindfulness. It's really about being in touch with the body and practicing moderation...neither too much yoga nor too much beer is healthy, but a little bit of everything in moderation is fine."
In other news, Lululemon has also cooperated with Vancouver's Stanley Park Brewery for the launch of their new "Curiosity Lager" The beer is currently only available in Canada but it will also make it's debut at the Seawheeze Festival in Vancouver on August 15.
Many marathoners have also enjoyed a beer at the finishing line at the Rock n' Roll Chicago half marathon and the Great Boston Beer Marathon which celebrate the sweet reward of a cold refreshing brew after a run.
