Your boyfriend’s b-day is coming up and you realize this is not like shopping for your BFF where you can go pick up whatever item you have recently been drooling over at Bloomies. Guys can be tough, and after a few suggestions including; concert tickets, a J.Crew shirt, or season 1 of his favorite show, I realized this year it was ultimately about an experience for us both to enjoy.
A solid portion of our relationship has been spent in the kitchen and we have been on a culinary journey together getting more advanced with time. This has been one activity that has actually helped us to communicate and have patience with each other. If you can survive the kitchen, you’ll go far!
After coming across David Lebowitz’s, My Paris Kitchen in the cookbook section of Strand, I was drawn in by his comedic descriptions and simple instructions. This is the perfect cookbook for guys! I realized he agreed while observing him pour over the book the next day like a kid on Christmas day with a new toy.
We decided to attempt the French classic dish Coq au vin together. Channeling the scene in Julie and Julia when she has to debone a chicken, I was so happy to have his muscles for the gruesome labor. In true French style, we ventured to the farmer’s market in Chicago to pick up fresh vegetables that would make up the stew. We then stopped at Trader Joes to find the best budget friendly wine to accompany our romantic evening dining at home. After spraying the counters with Lysol and hours of preparation. We felt so proud to say everything turned out perfectly!
The cookbook has so many great options, not to put Julia Child to shame but, I am going to stick with David’s male friendly book for now.
