One of the top prerequisites while choosing our first apartment together was making sure we were within walking distance to Trader Joe's. Young couples and single adults across the country can thank founder Joe Coulombe for opening the first market in Pasedena , CA back in 1967. It's amazing how the company has grown since this date. In fact, Business Week reports that Trader Joe's "quintupled the number of its stores between 1990 and 2001!" I am sure families enjoy shopping here as well, but the ideal customer is someone who wants to be in and out quickly, doesn't need large portions and will not demand the finest quality in town.
When living in New York, I used to refer to the Union Square location as "Club TJs" because there would be a daily hold out line of at least 50 people waiting to circle through the store's assembly line setup for efficient city shopping. The system is much more relaxed in Chicago, but it is still the most popular place for young adults to stalk up on their weekly necessities. Being able to grocery shop while saving a LOT of extra cash each week is such a relief. One item that I haven't been able to find anywhere other than TJs is their chopped pancetta! It's so perfect for adding into Italian recipes because no matter how sharp your knife is, chopping thick bacon is never an easy task!
After studying in Bologna, la salsa Bolognese has been one item that I have made my goal to master and craft an authentic recipe to share forever! The recipe focuses on high quality ingredients and should be paired with Tagliatelle or pappardelle to pick up the sauce.
Fortunately, Trader Joe's makes this recipe that much easier by packaging the chopped carrots, onions and celery together to be added while making this rich sauce.
Not to mention, a bottle of "two buck chuck" has to be one of the greatest rewards in the world. The pappardelle by the bag was great and I can't brag more about the exponential price difference between going out and having a relaxing cooking date night at home.
This is going to be one of our staples over the years, hands down.
